This research institute has started its activities in the field of breeding native poultry, Baluchi sheep, shaggy goat, purebred Sistani cattle and ostrich with the aim of improving the breed, improving breeding and increasing livestock production, and also finding scientific solutions to solve health, nutritional and management problems of these livestock. Other goals of this research institute include increasing the diversity of wildlife animals and studying their behavior, providing consulting services in the field of animal sciences to villagers and nomads, and also developing the spirit of research and investigation at the university and regional levels.

• Appearance characteristics: Ostriches usually weigh between 63 and 145 kilograms. The East African ostrich breed has an average weight of 115 kilograms for males and 100 kilograms for females. Exceptionally, the weight of a female ostrich can reach 156.8 kilograms. At maturity (two to four years), male ostriches reach a height of 2.1 to 2.8 meters, while female ostriches are 1.7 to 2 meters tall.

The size of the eggs varies from 35 grams to 50 grams, and the color of the eggs is completely white, and other colors are never seen.

The Sistani cattle have continued to exist as a genetic and strategic reserve for millennia in this region, as excavations and ancient discoveries in Shahr Sokhteh indicate that they have been influential in the lives of people in this region for more than 3,000 years BC.

• Appearance: Sistani cattle have a prominent body, strong and sturdy legs, a long and arched body, a medium-sized head, a small head with a wide and prominent forehead, and somewhat rough hair. Having a long and wrinkled hump is one of the distinctive characteristics of Sistani cattle. The hindquarters and thighs, especially in bulls and fattening cattle, are very wide and large and have a lot of good muscle structure that is close to the characteristics of beef cattle. The hornless trait is dominant in this breed, and most bulls and females are hornless or have short and loose horns. The dominant color in this breed is black, but the colors of the brindle (black and white), gray, tan, and blond are also seen.

One of the Iranian goat breeds native to the Sistan region, which is at risk of extinction due to successive droughts in Sistan and the drying up of Lake Hamun.

• Appearance: The color of this goat is often black, brown and white. The profile of the head of the native Sistani goat is smooth and straight, with a straight spine and arms and legs covered with hair. This goat is large in size and has a high milk production capacity due to genetic predisposition and the presence of suitable environmental conditions. Male goats often have horns and female goats are hornless. These goats have a lot of hair and have a beard on the lower part of the throat. There is also a tuft of hair on the forehead of these goats, which is the same as the crest.

The wildlife of Zabol Research Institute has various orders of animals such as birds, carnivores, herbivores and reptiles, and the main species of birds include partridge, tit, pheasant, quail, pheasant, peacock, horned bird, various birds of prey, flamingo, swan, ostrich, etc. They are kept in this zoo. The herbivores of this zoo include the Caspian horse, dromedary camel, maral deer, ram and ewe goat, Sistani cow, Baluchi squirrel. Short-nosed crocodile, python and land tortoise are among the main reptiles of the zoo. And various monkeys and also live in this zoo, which are omnivores.
